Official ratio and design notes for the national flag of Costa Rica.
| Official Ratio | 3:5 |
| Layout | Five horizontal bands in blue, white, red, white, and blue, with the central red band twice the width of each blue or white stripe. |
| Main Shapes | A plain five-band tricolor with two blue outer stripes, two narrower white inner stripes, and one broad red center stripe. |
| Construction Notes | The design relies on stripe width rather than added emblems for its identity. Because the red center band is doubled and framed symmetrically by white and blue, the flag stays balanced, easy to scale, and easy to recognize at a glance. |
The current Costa Rica flag dates from 1848, when Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno drew a new tricolor that Costa Rica's foreign affairs ministry says was inspired by the French flag. That gave the country the blue, white, and red design that still defines it today.
Costa Rica's current law on national symbols gives the colors a direct official meaning. The blue stripes represent the sky of the country, the white stripes represent peace, and the central red stripe represents the blood of those who fell for freedom.
The result is a flag that is both historical and civic. Its repeated blue and white bands create symmetry, while the wider red center gives the composition its strongest visual weight and makes the design easy to remember.
Costa Rica's official symbolism assigns meaning to the three colors rather than treating them as decoration. Blue stands for the country's sky, white stands for peace, and red stands for the blood shed by those who died for liberty.
Because the flag repeats blue and white around a single broad red band, the palette reads as an ordered sequence instead of a generic tricolor. The cooler outer colors create a calmer frame, while the wider red center carries the greatest emotional weight in the design.
The colors also do most of the symbolic work on the plain national flag, which appears without a coat of arms. That makes the palette itself central to recognition: even in a simple striped layout, the flag communicates Costa Rica's identity clearly.
